The town sits in the heart-shaped Muong Thanh Valley, surrounded by heavily forested hills. The scenery along the way here is stunning, with approach roads scything through thick forests and steep terrain. Tay, Hmong and Si La people live in the surrounding mountains, but the city and valley are mainly inhabited by ethnic Vietnamese.

Dien Bien Phu experiences a cold misty winter from December to February (lows at night around 13 degrees and highs by day around 22 degrees). The summer months between June and August are hot (daytime average low thirties / nights low twenties), humid and wet. Despite that, travel is possible all year round. The valley is at its most beautiful in the wet months of summer.

Dien Bien Phu might be a small town and not very well known, but it has a few attractions that are worth seeing, which might help you to get to know the culture and the history of Vietnam. Beside the museum, you can go visit the cemetery of fallen soldier or go admire the majestic rice field.
