| vietnam we can manage atf 2009 |
| Bangkok - Vietnam, which will organise the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) for the first time next year in Hanoi from January 5 to 12, has appointed one of its local professional conference organisers, Giang Vo Exhibition Center, to manage Travex, according to Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) international co-operation department director, Mr Pham Quang Hung. |
While there will be no shortage of interest from buyers for Vietnam, South-east Asia's hottest destination in recent years, all eyes will be on Giang Vo to produce quality buyers and sellers, especially with VNAT aiming for a show "as big as the one in Singapore (2007) or Bangkok".
Mr Hung said: "We are worried, but I have talked to my NTO colleagues from Thailand and Singapore and they have promised to help. It is the first time we are organising the show and there are some aspects we are not familiar with. And after this show (ATF 2008), we will start to look at things more closely. We have already prepared ATF brochures for distribution here and set up the steering committee to organise ATF."
Asked why Giang Vo was appointed, he said: "We want to manage ATF ourselves and we want our local players to learn from it."The steering committee comprised the chairman, minister and deputy minister of culture, sports and tourism, Ministry of Finance ("for some sponsorship support"), transport companies, airlines, hotels and other relevant agencies,
he said.
Travex will be held at the 64,000m2 National Convention Center, Vietnam?s largest meeting facility, comprising a conference hall which seats up to 3,800 people, and 30 meeting rooms of various sizes. It was built at a cost of US$250 million in time for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation CEO Summit and Economic Leaders Meeting in November 2006, which Vietnam pulled off successfully despite the challenge of accommodating more than 12,000 economic and business leaders from 21 Asia-Pacific economies, many of whom wanted to stay in four- and five-star hotels, which were limited during that peak season. Mr Hung admitted "Hanoi is facing a shortage of accommodation in the four- and five-star categories, but by January 2009, there will be more rooms".
He said Vietnam would do everything to ensure the success of ATF. "We have a lot of expectations. We can see it is the most important event under the ASEAN tourism framework and it will benefit us in marketing and promotion. It is also a lead up to the ASEAN Leaders Summit in November 2009 and in 2010, we mark 1,000 years of Hanoi as the capital."
Singapore Tourism Board chief executive, Mr Lim Neo Chian, when asked for his opinion on the support the more experienced ASEAN NTOs could offer first-timers, said: "If you look at the organisation of ATF, there are discussions at various levels, including at the NTO level, and processes to monitor its organisation. In this way, we can all chip in to ensure its success. I don't see any problem with buyers, as Vietnam's attractiveness is increasing, and Hanoi is a good location." |
