| island check koh lanta |
| Thailand is blessed with so many outlying islands.
Koh Lanta, located in the southeast corner of the Krabi province in southern Thailand, is by no means a tiny one. Its area, about 340km2, is nearly half the size of Singapore (705km2). But with a population of only around 27,000 people, and no mass tourism development, it is remote and unspoilt. |
Getting there
It does take some getting to. I flew from Bangkok to Krabi. From Krabi airport, it was an hour's drive to Pimalai Resort & Spa's private jetty (which is near the public jetty). Then it is another hour by speedboat direct to the resort.
Island impressions
Koh Lanta does not have the surreal view of the monolithic structures rising from the sea, which makes Krabi unique over Phuket or Samui. But it does have dense, green mountain backdrops, a paradise for birds (and bird-lovers), uncrowded, white beaches, and stunning sunsets. It is a very restful vacation spot.
Tourism development is still in the infant stages - may it continue so, for that is the charm of Koh Lanta.
There are simple huts, bungalows, several resorts catering for the mainstream market, along with restaurants and pubs, and only one certified five-star, Pimalai Resort and Spa.
Lovers of shopping and entertainment will be disappointed, as shopping possibilities are limited to the purchase of beach wear, food and necessities. There are no department stores, girlie bars or discos. If your clients want that, go to Phuket.
Why go?
Phuket is crowded again and Khao Lak is enjoying much of Phuket's spillover because of its low rates.
The return of demand to Phuket and Khao Lak is at the expense of Krabi, which has fewer direct flights and more expensive fares over Phuket. But this is good news for those clients who want beach resorts less trampelled by mass tourists.
Who is it suitable for?
• Luxury clients have yet another option in sun-kissed southern Thailand with Pimalai opening its Villa Estate offering 39 pool villas.
• Honeymooners who want to impress with a new destination.
• Scuba-divers, as dive operators based in Koh Lanta have the best access to what have been described as the "fantastic" southern dive sites of Koh Ha, Koh Rok, Hin Daeng and Hin Muang.
• Nature-lovers, as there are many nature trails to trek, caves to explore and mangrove forests to paddle through.
• Families and small groups, who can enjoy island or snorkelling excursions.
Market mix
As an indication, Pimalai's guest mix includes the UK, Germany, Scandinavia, France, Switzerland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong, according to general manager, Mr Franck de Lestapis. |
