HUA HIN
OVERVIEW |
Hua Hin is a famous beach resort town in Thailand, located in the northern part of the Malay Peninsula. It has a population of 84,883 over the area of 911 km2, geographical location 12o34'N 99o57'E some 200 Km south of Bangkok, Thailand, and is one of 8 district (Amphoe) of the Prachuap Khiri Khan province.
The beach resort of Hua Hin is located 295 kilometers south of Bangkok and 90 kilometers from the provincial capital. It boasts a large market, and is full of food and souvenir shops as well as hotels. Beaches are located in the east of the province, and the main pier is on Highway No.4 at km.232. The beach at Hua Hin is 5 kilometers long, and full of white sand and clear water, ideal for swimming.
Located on the sunrise side of the Gulf of Thailand, Cha-am and Hua Hin are quiet relaxed coastal towns, perfect for family vacations. In contrast to Pattaya, across the Gulf, these sister resorts lack the bustle of an international playground and instead afford a quiet escape.
The Hua Hin beach resort boasts long uncluttered beaches and has the added attraction of a traditional fishing port. Neither place attempts to imitate the international scene and are content with an enduring Thai identity. Hua Hin, incidentally, is Thailand’s oldest beach resort, enjoying a vogue among Thai royalty and aristocracy since the 1920s.
The main joys of both resorts are a peaceful time lazing on the beach soaking up the tropical sunshine, the fun of a variety of water sports and a delight in relishing some excellent seafood dining.
History
Back in the year 1834, before the name Hua Hin was created, some agricultural area of Phetchaburi Province was hit by severe drought. A group of farmers had moved southward until they found a small village which had a white bright sand and a row of rocks along the beach. They settled in the place and gave it a name Samore Riang which mean rows of rock.
In 1921 the director of the state railway, Prince Purachatra, built the Railway Hotel close to the beach. King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) liked the place so much that he built a summer palace there . The palace was named, Wang Klai Kang Won ('Far from Worries'). It is now the full-time residence of His Majesty the King of Thailand. His Royal Highness Prince Krom Phra Naresworarit was the first member of the royal family to build a group of palaces at Ban Laem Hin called Sukaves and he give the name of the beach next to his palace Hua Hin.
In the year 1932, Hua Hin is only part of Pran Buri district. Until the year 1949 Hua Hin was promote to be district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province. After the building of southern route railway, Hua Hin became the first and most popular beach resort of Thailand.
