KARON
OVERVIEW |
Karon Beach is one of the more exposed beaches on Phuket and in off season the water is too rough for safe swimming, especially for children. The sand is yellower and far grainier than other Phuket beaches (except for Mai Khao Beach in the north). In season however the waters are largely calm and the beach is terrific for swimming. There is almost no shade on the beach, so bring litres of sunscreen or invest in a deckchair and umbrella.
The development on Karon is far more spread out than on other Phuket beaches and even in season it is dead easy to find an empty stretch of sand. This makes it a popular beach both with families and those looking for a quiet spot.
Karon has three main districts to stay in, the north, the centre and the south. The guesthouses, hotels and resorts at the northern end are clustered around the roundabout and along Patak Rd running back off the beach. Heading south on Karon Rd which runs by the beach there's a handful of low-key self-contained resorts, which are massive, but nowhere near as intrusive as they could be, till you reach Luang Pho Chuan Rd which runs back from the beach road till it hits Patak Rd. Towards the far end of Luang Pho Chuan are a bunch of budget guesthouses and cheapish hotels. Heading back south again there's a small group of mid- to upper-range resorts grouped around Karon's southern headland and back off the beach just before Karon Rd rises over the hill and enters Kata.
Most of the entertainment and restaurant options are on Patak and Luang Pho Chuan Rds and, as there's just about nothing on the beach itself aside from the occasional ice-cream or fruit vendor, most people find themselves off the beach come the evening.
While it doesn't have the pulsating nightlife of Patong, Karon nevertheless isn't as quiet as it may appear at first glance -- the beach is huge and come the evening the bars and restaurants sprinkled across the area do spring to life. If that still isn't enough, Karon Beach is but a walk from Kata Beach and is even connected by a regular, albeit very slow, songtheaw service.

KARON TRAVEL TIPS |
Climate
There are only two seasons in a year. The rainy season (May to October) and the hot season (November to April). The low season of phuket is between September and October as they are the wettest months. The best period for a visit, is from November to February, when it is possible to see the clear blue sky, feel the fresh sea breeze and marvel at the crystal clear water while lying on powdery, palm-fringed beaches. Average temperatures ranges between 23oC and 33oC. |
