YU NUI BEACH IN SOUTHERN PHUKET

You can quickly get away from the rather developed Nai Harn beach by mounting the headland and descending in to the small cove just to the south. This lovely little strip of sand is home to several small operations aimed at backpackers. The swimming and snorkelling here are very good and the beach is almost hidden from the road, giving it that secluded feel that is so rare on Phuket. You could feasibly walk here from Nai Harn Beach, but it's a lot easier if you have your own transport. Make sure your motorcycle has plenty of pick-up however, to make it over the steep, winding hills. Yu Nui Beach was badly hit by the tsunami, and now, more than two years later, it is still picking up the pieces. The long-running Yu Nui Bayview Bungalows gave up on the idea of trying to rebuild on their low-lying site and abandoned the location. As unlikely as it is, locals are wary of a repeat of the cataclysmic geological event, so the rebuilding that's going on is all a little further up in the hills. Yu Nui Bungalows is on the mend, and there's even a brand new spot that's opened up since the tsunami.
