MAE SARIANG OVERVIEW
Mae Sariang is a small town and district alongside the Yuam River in Mae Hong Son Province, northern Thailand. There are many links associated Burma in terms of architecture, large population of Burmese Muslims.
It is very mountainous and forested in the areas surrounding Mae Sariang. This makes it a great haven for refugees fleeing Burma. The neighboring are (from north clockwise) Mae La Noi of Mae Hong Son Province, Mae Chaem, Hot of Chiang Mai Province, Sop Moei of Mae Hong Son Province again Kayin State and Kayah State of Myanmar.
Mae Sariang is quieter and less touristed than others nearby. It's a great place to sit by the river and relax, or to use as a base for trekking. With a number of wats in town and lovely riverside scenery there's plenty to explore, and daily local life in a small town means that there's plenty to observe. Most guesthouses organise boat trips on the Salween River and, political conditions allowing, there are plenty of opportunities for trekking in this area where you can visit a number of Karen villages. It is supposedly possible to organise combined rafting and hiking trips all the way to Umphang. We would be interested in hearing from anyone who has completed such a feat!
