tourism reps attend travel fair in japan

The Myanmar based Japanese Tourism Promotion Committee (JTPC) and other stakeholders in the local tourism industry are planning to take part in the JATA World Tourism Congress

The Myanmar based Japanese Tourism Promotion Committee (JTPC) and other stakeholders in the local tourism industry are planning to take part in the JATA World Tourism Congress and Travel Fair 2008, which will be held in Tokyo from September 18 to 21. The travel fair will be organised by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism: Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Tourism Industry Association of Japan. Daw Khin May Myint, the vice chairman of JTPC, said all members of the committee, one domestic airline, two hotels and one souvenir shop will participate as a seller group at the event. The committee is a 10-member group affiliated with the Union of Myanmar Travel Association (UMTA). Mr Nakamura Eiji, the treasurer of the committee, said the group will participate in the JATA World Travel Fair under the guidance of UMTA to promote Myanmar as a travel destination among Japanese citizens. “We will show that we are ready to provide the best possible service to all Japanese tourists,” said Mr Nakamura, who is also the manager of Myanmar Nara-APEX Travel and Tours Company. Daw Khin May Myint said the committee’s booth at the travel fair will display information about major destinations like Bagan, Mandalay, Inle, Yangon and beaches, as well as about the recovery of the delta area. Mr Nakamura said that Myanmar booth will also feature traditional entertainment. “Some of our young participants will dress in ethnic Kachin, Shan and Chin costumes,” he said. Daw Khin May Myint, who is also the director of Karaweik M and J Tours Company, said it was important to promote Myanmar in Japan to counteract the negative press the country has received in the past year from events like cyclone Nargis and the September protests. “If we don’t go to travel fairs Myanmar’s image could continue to slide on the global tourism scene.,” she said. Organisers expect this year’s fair to attract about 200,000 participants, including Japanese stakeholders in the tourism industry as well as international tour operators, hotel groups and airlines.
