MINGUN OVERVIEW
Located on the western bank of the river Ayeyarwaddy, approximately 7 miles north of Mandalay, Mingun is a town of Sagaing Division in northwest Myanmar (formerly Burma). The famous site of Mingun is about 11 miles from Sagaing and can be reached by road. The drive takes about 30 minutes. You can also travel to Mingun from Mandalay by road or boat which cruises 7 miles up river from Mandalay. The main attraction is the ruined Mingun Paya, a Buddhist temple with the remains of a massive stupa begun by King Bodawpaya in 1790. The temple was not completed, due to an astrologer claiming that, once the temple was finished, the king would die. Had the stupa had been completed, it would have been the largest in the world at 150 meters. Despite its ruined state, the remains are impressive. King Bodawpaya has a gigantic bell cast to go with his huge stupa. The Mingun Bell weighs 90 tons, and is today the largest uncracked bell in the world. The weight of the bell in Burmese measurement, is 55555 ticals, written as "Min Mhu Mhan Mhan Pyaw", with the M and P representing the number 5 in Burmese astronomy and numerology.
