| PHNOM PENH - To strengthen and exchange cultural and tourism co-operation among the countries of the Greater Mekong Sub-region, Cambodia is hosting the GMS Boat Race in Phnom Penh from November 15 to 17. |
Participants from the host country, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and China’s Yunnan Province are expected. The boat race will coincide with the Cambodian Water Festival during which hundreds of local traditional boats from different provinces race against each other. The Water Festival is held annually at the confluence of four rivers in front of the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh to showcase Khmer cultural tradition, artistic talents, and technical prowess through oaring.
As organiser, the Ministry of Tourism of Cambodia will fully host 28 delegates from all participating countries. Six racing boats will be arranged for each delegation.
The ministry is also hoping to feature Cambodia’s coastal area with its pristine beaches, scuba sites and leisure infrastructure. Ecotourism sites such as waterfalls, wildlife, tribal life and the varied species of flora and fauna are expected to draw adventure travellers, naturalists and bird watchers. |
