MYANMAR TRAIN INFORMATION
The history of Myanmar Railways dates back to the colonial era of Burma. The idea of introducing a Railway transport system in Myanmar germinated in the year 1880. The British rulers planned a railway route between Phitsanoluk in northern Thailand (erstwhile Kingdom of Siam) and Moulmein in Burma. Unfortunately, the idea ended in fiasco for dearth of funds for the project. The Japanese forces gained control over entire South East Asia in early 1939. They took initiative for building the railway link. Their sole intention was to use the railway as supply line for transporting army and war equipments to the Burmese front with the secret motive of invading India. The Japanese then engaged Asian workforce in Myanmar Railway Project. A huge force of 240000 laborers joined hands in laying the railway tracks. By 1942, things were easy after the fall of Singapore, Malaya and Indonesia in the World War II. The Japanese occupiers got at their disposal, a large contingent of skilled, disciplined and able-bodied Prisoners of War (POWs) to harness the horrendous project. The Myanmar Railway has traversed a long way since it came into being in the British days. The experiences of pre and post-World War II days and social and political upheavals in Myanmar have lent the Railways a maturity and vision to usher in a new era of prosperity. The railway services have constructed 250 new stations, making a total of 739 railway stations. They have upgraded Yangon Railway Station and built the new international level Mandalay Railway Station. The government has fulfilled the national and regional aspirations by opening new railway tracks. Presently, there are 9009 large and small railroad bridges in Myanmar as compared to 5650 bridges in the past. The government railways have 4300km (2700 miles) of track covering most parts of Myanmar. But the principal route is still Yangon to Mandalay (travel time 12-14 hours). At this time, the first class facility is provided . The sleeping berths are available for night journey. The regular services from Yangon to Mandalay and from Yangon to Thazi are available
