| A business delegation from Myanmar attended the Third ASEAN Business and Investment Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from December 9 to 12 with the purpose of exploring business and investment opportunities among ASEAN and East Asian countries. |
The summit was sponsored by the ASEAN Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ASEAN-CCI), said U Myat Thin Aung, president of Myanmar Industrial Association (MIA).
Speaking to the Myanmar Times before the summit, U Myat Thin Aung said a delegation of more than 10 members would travel to Malaysia, comprising leading private businessmen in Myanmar representing the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industries (UMFCCI).
The delegates would hold business discussions with their counterparts from other ASEAN and East Asian countries, he said.
The summit is intended to point out the leading role that the private sector plays in the economies of all countries, said Dr Sein Myint, a council member on the ASEAN Business Advisory Council.
He said the private sector was the locomotive that drove all economies.
The meeting also focused on international and regional economic and financial problems, the strengthening of institutions in the region, development issues, and frameworks for future cooperation among nations.
Myanmar also displayed it main export commodities - including agricultural, marine and forest products - in the Myanmar National Pavilion at the ASEAN and East Asian Trade Exhibition, which was held in conjunction with the summit.
ASEAN plays a major role in Myanmar's international trade, accounting for more than 70 per cent of its exports.
