KALAY
OVERVIEW |
Kalay is one of the famous towns in Sagaing Division. This town can be reached by air from Yangon. Kalay touched Chin State and is one of the gateways to enter the Northern Chin State by road. Although Chin mountain ranges lie on the West, the environs of Kalay are plains. Kalay is being developed and progressing as it is a crucial link in trading with India. Myanmar - India border town Ta - Mu lies 83 miles from Kalay. As a commemoration of goodwill relationship between Myanmar and India, Kalay - Kalay Wa - Ta Mu motor road was built and was opened on 13th February 2001.
Now, it affords convenient communication for bilateral trading due to the opening of the World-class motorway. It was also built on a crash programme built within a year during the 2nd World War in 1942, while the British Army was retreating from Myanmar to India.
Moreover, Kalay-TaMu road in Myanmar and Imphal main road in India played a vital role at the time of the World famous Imphal Operation in March 1944.
The Iron-Frame Bridges, which were constructed in conjunction with Kalay - TaMu Imphal main road built when the British Army was retreated.Among the (3) valleys - Ho - Pone, Hoo-Kaung and Ka - Baw, Ta - Mu is in the Ka - Baw valley. Myanmar - India Friendship Road is 83 miles long from Ta Mu to Kalay and 94 miles to Kalay Wa and has been built according to Set- standard for easy access.
