BAGO
OVERVIEW |
| The historical town of Bago, formerly Pegu, is the capital of Bago Division in Myanmar. Located 80 km in northeast of Yangon, Bago was founded in 573 by two Mon princes and soon developed into the capital of the most important realm of the Mon, a people, which has in the mean-time been almost completely assimilated into the people of the Burmans.
Although the town had been founded by Mons and was for most of the time mainly inhabited by Mons, Bago often had Burmanese regents. Once, for about 10 years at the beginning of the 17th century, even a Portuguese adventurer established himself as King of the region.
In 1757 the major part of Bago was destroyed by the Burmanese King and Conqueror Alaungpaya. Therefore only a few buildings remind the visitor of the history of the town. They are almost without exception of a religious nature.
The town of Bago is an interesting day trip to experience a bit of Burma’s rural side. Once you’ve made your way beyond the military garrisons and string of small towns, the drive to Bago takes you past numerous rice paddies, farms and an assortment of small villages which line the road and can be easily explored by foot during that brief leg stretch or nature call. The town of Bago isn’t rural per se but is decidedly rustic with a bit of a frontier feel to it, and becomes quite bustling as you cross the bridge over the Bago River.

BAGO TRAVEL TIPS |
* Climate
The Bago Town is located on the southern edge of the country's dry zone. Thus it generally has a longer hot period from February to September or even October, with the second half being overlapped with the rainy season. Rains start wetting the division in July, and end in November.
* Transport
The two major highways for both cars and trains: Yangon - Pyay - Bagan road and Yangon - Mandalay road pass the division. However there is only one rough road passing Bago range in east-west direction. The road connecting Taungoo on the east and Pyay on the west could be used by trucks and four wheel drive vehicles in the dry season. Heavy tractors and logging trucks may travel in the wet months with difficulty.
* Sightseeing
The sightseeing ticket costs $10 per person and covers all sights in Bago. It is possible to see many of the sights from outside thus avoiding the expensive entrance fees. If you have seen enough pagodas in Myanmar, then Shwemawdaw Pagoda, Shwethalyaung Buddha and Mahazedi Pagoda are the most impressive of the sights here.
