HAT SAT
OVERVIEW |
| Hat Sat is a small village on the Nam Ou River in the far north of Laos. Being the closest place of contact between the river and Phongsaly, it is really only visited by tourists as a transit point. While the area is lovely there is really no reason people usually stay while travelling between Phongsaly and Muang Khoa.
There is only one truck per day which travels the one-hour, 20km journey between Hat Sa and its more popular neighbour. This means that if your boat arrives in late, or if there are no more boats available for departure, you have to stay. There are two extremely basic guesthouses, a couple of noodle soup shops and one small restaurant. The locals tend to be delighted when people stay instead of transiting through, so if you're prepared to make an effort with your phrasebook or have a way with sign language, you're in for a treat.
