LAK SAO OVERVIEW
This town is situated twenty kilometres shy of the Vietnamese border under the shadow of massive limestone outcrops in the midst of untouched forest...at the moment. Lak Sao is a major logging centre for the surrounding area with logging trucks rumbling up to the Vietnamese border throughout the day. Most of the timber's final destination is Taiwan or Japan via the Vietnamese port of Vinh. There is no reason to visit Lak Sao in its own right although the trip here is stunningly beautiful traversing spectacular ridges and the scenic Nam Theum and also passing the base for the construction of the Nam Theun dam which came on line in early 1998 with the capacity to generate twice as much power as that of Nam Ngum north of Vientiane. Most of the power is for sale to Thailand and Vietnam. At one stage the private fiefdom of a Lao general, the town was a boom town with a real wild west feel to it, there was even an animal shelter run by foreign experts, to look after the animals after the generals logging teams deprived them of habitat. Now that the General has been "re-located" (because he cut down too many trees according to one tour guide we came across!) it appears that the centre has gone as well, which is a pity. The other trade which Lak Sao is famed for, the wild animal trade, still thrives at the market, where reptiles, monkeys and various other animals (many endangered) still goes on. If you are planning on exiting to Vietnam by land this is a crossing which is open to foreigners as long as you have the correct stamp in your passport.
