The province of Koh Kong is a vast but sparsely populated area in
Cambodia's southwest, where the overwhelming majority of the population live along the coastline and where the mountains remain untamed. The Koh Kong Province has a total population of 132,106, covers an area of 11,160 square kilometres and comprises 8 districts).
The fishing is the main source of income for most residents. The tourism is tiny since most people are transiting from Thailand to Sihanoukville only, but there is great potential for future growth. Krong Koh Kong has several beaches in the vicinity. There is a beach a few kilometers south of town where the river estuary meets the sea. Locals like it and there are pedalos and jet skis for rent. Farther afield are countless veaches that can be accessed by moto or boat. There are some fantastic beaches on the western side of the island of Koh Kong, but there aren't so cheap to get to. Try to pay around 800B per boat for a round-trip charter.
There are some scenic waterfalls upriver from Krong Koh Kong, although in the dry season they are less impressive, as the water level drops. The water is fairly pure as it comes down from Chuor Phnom Kravanh, where there are almost no human settlements. The most spectacular is Tatal Waterfall, located nearly an hour upstream from Koh Kong. Set in a lush jungle gorge, it is a thundering set of rapids in the wet season, plunging over a 4m rock shelf. In the dry season, visitors can walk across much of the ledge, rather like at the famous Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe-Zambia border. The wet season is more spectacular, but the dry season is more fun, as it is possible to take a dip in the gentle-flowing river.
The Tatai waterfall can be reached on the road to Sre Ambel. once the road works are finished it will be signposted. There is a second waterfall or set of rapids, known as Koh Poi Waterfall, on another tributary of the river. It's great to clamber about here in the dry season, as there are immense boulders to use as stepping stones.

The small town of Koh Kong is about 10km from the border and taxis ply the route to the estuary of the Koh Kong river, then you cross by small boats until the bridge is finished. From the port, fast boats link daily with Sihanouk Ville and Sre Ambel. A road is being built to contact the area with Rout No 4 between Phnom Penh and Sihanouk Ville (expecting to cut the travel tome from a full day to just around 4-5 hours). For most travelers, Koh Kong is merely a jumping off point to continue on to the seaside city of Sihanouk Ville of on to Bangkok for other way around, but this is going to change. Although there is little to say about sightseeing for lack of infrastructure, the place is basically untouched by tourism and it offers a glimpse of a Cambodia that is removed from the modern world. With the proposed nomination as World Heritage of the largely primary forest of the Cardamom Mountain stretching East of Koh Kong.
* The route from Thai border: You are suggested to get a motorcycle or car for a 10 minute ride into town.
* The route from Phnom Penh: You take a car or minivan for along the national route 4 and a long road through the jungle. The travel time varies by road and car conditions.
*The route from Sihanoukville: This town is about 2 hours closer to Koh Kong than Phnom Penh. You take take the ferry leaving at noon and arriving at Koh Kong around 4pm.

GETTING AROUND

Getting around the province is limited to boat travel because there are no roads linking Krong Koh Kong to the rest of Cambodia. This is fast-changing, as the Thai military is bulldozing a road from Thai border all the way through the jungle to join National Highway 4 (NH4) near Sre Ambel. Soon Krong Koh Kong will be just five hours from Phnom Penh by road, revolutionizing life for the residents of the town. |

*Visa
Travelers from most countries can get a visa right at the Cambodian border in Koh Kong for $20 to $30 for a 30 day visit.
*Currency Exchange
Both dollars and Thai baht can be used around Krong Koh Kong. Changing either currency into riel is easy at Psar Leu (Central Market) or at most guesthouses. The nearest banks that deal with travelers checks and credit cards are in Sihanoukville or Thailand.
There are plenty of private phone booths around town from where reasonably priced local calls can be made. International calls are expensive, but no doubt someone will set up an internet call service in the near future. Email services are available at Otto's. There is also a tourist office on the waterfront about 1km south of boat dock, but often guesthouse, such as Cheap Charlie's and Otto's, prove more useful.
